Reduce RTO on COD ordersKeep COD for good buyers, ask for an advance where it is risky
COD rules by PIN code and buyer history, a COD limit by order value, part-payment, and the area's return history on every order — built into your HOD Media store, no paid COD app.
Quick Answer
To reduce RTO on COD orders in India, ask for money up front only where the risk is real and keep plain COD for everyone else. A HOD Media store does this without a paid app: COD rules by PIN code, first-time buyers or buyers who refused before (prepaid only, part-payment or a COD charge), a COD limit by order value with an advance above it, and part-payment on COD. Every order shows its area's past return rate and couriers' delivery record there — facts, not a score. Free for 3 months, then ₹299/month with 0% commission.
Six COD controls in your store
- 1
COD rules by PIN code and buyer history
Write up to 20 rules, checked top to bottom. Conditions: the delivery PIN code is on your list, the buyer has never ordered from you, or the buyer has refused COD parcels at your store before. Outcomes: prepaid only, part-payment required, an extra COD charge, or COD allowed as an exception. The shopper sees a polite message, never the rule.
- 2
A COD limit by order value
Offer full Cash on Delivery only up to an amount you choose. Above it, ask for online payment, a % advance or a fixed ₹ advance — so a big COD order is never a pure gamble.
- 3
Part-payment (advance) on COD
Collect a fixed amount or a percentage online and the rest in cash. A buyer who has paid something is a buyer who is expecting the parcel. You need a payment gateway, GoKwik or UPI (Direct) switched on to collect the advance.
- 4
Delivery history on every order
Each order page shows how often COD orders to that area were returned, and how each courier has delivered there. These are past figures, shown as facts — not a score and not a prediction — so you decide whether to call the buyer, ask for an advance or pick a different courier.
- 5
WhatsApp order updates
Buyers get order updates on WhatsApp — from your own number when you connect WhatsApp, otherwise the order-confirmed and shipped updates go from our shared number signed with your store name.
- 6
Courier labels without product names
Optionally show couriers a code like ORD123-1 instead of the product name, on labels and packing slips. Price, quantity, COD amount and weight stay real.
Where to find them: Dashboard → Settings → Payments → Cash on delivery. Step by step: COD rules, COD limit and part-payment.
HOD Media vs Shopify + paid COD apps
On Shopify, COD controls usually come from paid apps installed on top of the plan. On HOD Media they are part of the store.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is RTO in ecommerce?
RTO means Return to Origin: the parcel goes out but is not delivered — usually a COD buyer refuses it or cannot be reached — and the courier brings it back. You pay shipping both ways and the stock is stuck in transit for days, which is why RTO on COD orders hurts small Indian stores more than almost anything else.
How can I reduce RTO on COD orders?
Ask for some money up front where the risk is real, and keep plain COD for everyone else. On HOD Media you do that with COD rules (by PIN code, first-time buyers or buyers who refused before), a COD limit by order value with an advance above it, and part-payment on COD. Each order also shows the area's past return rate and how couriers have delivered there, so you can call the buyer or switch courier before you ship. All of it is included in the Store plan at ₹299/month.
Can I turn off COD for certain PIN codes?
Yes. Make a COD rule with the PIN codes you want (up to 500 per rule) and choose prepaid only, part-payment or an extra COD charge for them. Rules run top to bottom and the first match decides, so you can also add an exception above a stricter rule.
Can I ask COD buyers to pay part of the order online?
Yes. Part-payment collects a fixed amount or a percentage online and the rest in cash on delivery. You can offer it to everyone, require it through a COD rule, or require it only above your COD order limit. The advance is collected through your payment gateway, GoKwik or UPI (Direct).
Does HOD Media give each order an RTO risk score?
No. We show facts instead: how often COD orders to that area were returned in the last 180 days, and how each courier has delivered there, with small samples hidden. They are past results, not a prediction for this order — you make the call.
Will COD rules annoy genuine buyers?
Only if you make them broad. Rules are off until you switch them on, no rule means COD is allowed, and buyer history counts only orders at your own store — so a regular customer keeps plain COD unless you decide otherwise.
Do these COD controls cost extra?
No. They are part of the Store plan — free for the first 3 months, then ₹299/month with 0% commission. Your payment gateway charges its usual fee on the advance it collects; your courier charges its usual COD fee.
