Store Speed & Core Web Vitals on Indian Networks: What Actually Matters

How to measure and improve Core Web Vitals for an Indian online store, and why testing on a slow 4G profile matters more than global benchmarks.

What should you actually test for store speed on Indian networks?

Test your store's Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and Interaction to Next Paint (INP, which replaced First Input Delay in 2024) — under a throttled mobile connection, not on your office Wi-Fi or a desktop. Use Google PageSpeed Insights or WebPageTest set to a mid-range Android device profile with a slow 4G network simulation. This matters because a large share of Indian shoppers browse on mid-tier phones over patchy mobile data, and your store's real-world speed is only as good as its performance under those conditions, not under lab-perfect broadband.

Separately, tools like TRAI MySpeed, Ookla Speedtest, and Opensignal measure the speed of the network itself — how fast a SIM or broadband connection is in a given city or pincode. These are useful for understanding the environment your customers are browsing in, but they don't measure your store's performance. Core Web Vitals are a property of your webpage, not the network. Conflating the two is the single most common mistake in this space: knowing that Jio users in Bihar average a certain download speed tells you nothing about whether your product page loads in 2 seconds or 8.

Why does network speed data matter if it doesn't measure your store?

Network benchmarks tell you what conditions to design for. If aggregate data shows a meaningful share of your target customers are on 4G with variable latency rather than stable fibre broadband, that's a signal to keep your store lightweight — fewer render-blocking scripts, compressed images, minimal third-party widgets — rather than a signal you need to act on directly.

Think of network speed tools as describing the road, and Core Web Vitals tools as describing how your car performs on that road. You don't fix a slow store by improving the road; you fix it by making the car lighter.

How do you actually measure Core Web Vitals for an Indian store?

Three tools cover most of what a small business owner needs:

Google PageSpeed Insights gives you both lab data (a simulated test run) and, once your store has enough traffic, field data pulled from real Chrome users via the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX). The field data is what matters most, because it reflects actual visitors on actual networks, including Indian mobile users if that's who visits your store.

WebPageTest lets you choose a specific device and network profile — a common choice for Indian conditions is a mid-range Android device (comparable to a Moto G4) combined with a
