How do you write product descriptions that sell?
Write the description around the buyer's outcome, and back each promise with a fact the buyer can check. A good description does three things in order: it names the product, it says what the product does for the buyer, and it answers the question that stops the buyer from ordering.
What order should a product description follow?
- Name the product clearly. Use the words a buyer types into search, such as the product type, capacity or material. A creative name alone does not tell a new visitor what the product is.
- Lead with the main benefit. A feature is a property of the product, such as a 20-litre capacity. A benefit is what the buyer gets from it, such as room for a full day's gear without a bulky bag. Put the benefit first and the feature after it as proof.
- Add three to five short bullets. Start each bullet with what the buyer gets, then add the proof. Keep one idea in each bullet.
- Show when the buyer would use it. Describe real situations such as commuting, travel, gifting, monsoon weather or a small home. Use scenes your buyers will recognise.
- Give concrete details. Include dimensions, material, capacity, compatibility, included items, care instructions and warranty terms where they apply. Check every detail before you publish, because a wrong size causes a return.
- Answer the main objection. Each product has one doubt that stops most buyers, such as fit for clothing, setup for electronics or delivery time for furniture. Answer it on the page.
Which details matter on an Indian store?
- Payment options. Name COD, UPI, card and netbanking near the buy button if you offer them. A shopper who cannot find COD may leave the page.
- Delivery. State the dispatch window and the usual delivery time.
- GST invoices. If you issue GST invoices, say so. Business buyers often need one to claim input tax credit.
What should you avoid?
Avoid vague superlatives and claims the product cannot prove, such as "durable" with no material or test named. These words do not persuade careful buyers, and they raise returns when the product does not match the expectation.
Read the description on a phone before you publish it, because most shoppers scroll on one.
