What a Small D2C Store Really Costs in India: The Four Cost Areas

What an online store costs an Indian small business: platform fee, payment gateway fees, shipping and returns, setup time and GST invoicing.

What does an online store cost a small business in India?

Most small sellers look at the monthly platform fee first. It is usually the smallest part of the bill. The real cost comes from four areas: the platform subscription and domain, payment gateway fees, shipping and returns, and your setup time. Estimate all four for your own order volume before you compare two platforms.

Check the vendor's pricing page on the day you decide, because published prices change.

What are the four cost areas?

  1. Platform subscription and domain. The subscription pays for hosting, the storefront, the admin panel and updates. A custom domain such as yourbrand.in is usually bought separately from a domain registrar. HOD Media stores run on a custom domain with SSL included, and you can cancel any time.
  1. Payment gateway fees. Gateways charge a percentage of each successful online payment. The rate often differs by method, such as UPI, debit card, credit card, netbanking or wallet. Some gateways also charge a setup fee, and GST applies to these fees. HOD Media takes no commission and no per-order fee on sales, so the gateway fee on prepaid orders is the main payment cost. HOD Media works with Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree, and also supports Stripe and PayPal.
  1. Shipping, packaging and returns. Courier rates depend on weight, zone and sometimes size. Cash on delivery adds a courier collection charge. When a parcel is refused or cannot be delivered, you pay for the trip out and the trip back, and that order earns you nothing. HOD Media offers shipping rates by zone, weight or pincode, with about 20 courier partners to choose from.
  1. Setup and your time. A template store that you build yourself costs your time. A designer or agency is a one-time cost that depends on scope. Product photos and product copy are real costs even when no one sends you an invoice for them. HOD Media offers done-for-you setup as an optional service.

What costs are easy to miss?

  • GST invoices. If you are GST-registered, every order needs a valid invoice with your GSTIN and the correct tax split. HOD Media creates GST invoices once you add your GSTIN, and supports CGST, SGST and IGST. You do not need a GST number to start.
  • Commission. Check whether the plan takes a percentage of sales. HOD Media takes no commission on sales.
  • Messages. Order updates on WhatsApp and by email reduce "where is my order" messages. HOD Media sends WhatsApp order updates and abandoned-cart reminders, plus order emails.
  • Add-ons. Separate apps for invoices, shipping or reviews can add a monthly charge each. Check what the base plan already includes.

How do you estimate your monthly cost?

  1. Write down your expected monthly orders and your average order value.
  2. Multiply the average order value by your gateway's rate for the payment method most customers use, then by your orders. This is your prepaid payment cost.
  3. Multiply the courier rate for a typical parcel by your orders.
  4. Add the COD charge for the share of orders you expect to be COD.
  5. Add a returns allowance: a realistic share of COD orders, multiplied by the forward and return freight.
  6. Add the platform subscription, plus the yearly domain cost divided by 12.

Compare the total with each platform's own pricing. If you have three months of order data, use the monthly average.
