How Much Does an Ecommerce Website Builder Cost in India? The Full Bill, Not Just the Plan Price

What an ecommerce website builder actually costs in India: platform fees, domain, payment gateway cuts, courier charges and the hidden line items.

How much does an ecommerce website builder cost in India?

A self-serve ecommerce website builder in India generally costs somewhere between nothing and a few thousand rupees a month for the software subscription itself. Free and near-free entry tiers exist. Mid-range hosted plans typically sit in the low thousands per month, or a few thousand rupees a year when billed annually. A custom build by an agency or freelance developer is a different category of spending altogether — a one-time development fee plus ongoing hosting and maintenance, usually running into tens of thousands of rupees before the store takes its first order.

But the subscription is rarely the largest number on the bill. A working Indian online store also pays for a domain name, a payment gateway that takes a percentage of every transaction, courier shipping per parcel, and — if the business is registered — the accounting work behind Goods and Services Tax (GST) invoicing. Add returns to origin (RTO) on cash on delivery (COD) orders, where the courier charges you for a parcel that came back unsold. A store paying ₹0 in software fees can still be losing money per order. The honest way to compare ecommerce website builders in India is to price one month of your actual expected orders end to end, not to compare plan pages.

What are the actual cost line items for an online store in India?

The platform subscription

The platform subscription is the fee you pay for the storefront software, hosting and admin panel. Hosted platforms bundle hosting into the price. Self-hosted options like WooCommerce make the software free but move hosting, security updates and plugin licences onto your plate. Free is not the same as cheap once you are paying for a managed host and half a dozen paid extensions.

Annual billing is almost always cheaper per month than monthly billing across the category. The tradeoff is commitment: you are betting on the platform before you know whether your store sells.

The domain name

A custom domain — yourbrand.in or yourbrand.com — is a separate annual renewal, paid to a registrar or bundled by the platform. It is one of the smaller line items and one of the most important. A store on a subdomain of somebody else's platform is harder to advertise, harder to trust, and impossible to move cleanly later. HOD Media supports custom domains on hosted stores for exactly this reason.

Payment gateway charges

Payment gateway charges are a percentage of each order, plus GST on that percentage. This is the line item that scales with your revenue, which means it eventually dwarfs the subscription. Unified Payments Interface (UPI), cards, netbanking and wallets are often priced differently from one another. Ask any platform which gateways it supports and whether using a non-preferred gateway attracts an additional platform-level transaction fee — some builders charge one, some do not, and the difference compounds on every order.

COD is its own economics. The courier collects cash and remits it to you after a cycle, minus a COD handling fee. COD tends to carry a higher rate of refusal at the door, and each refused parcel becomes an RTO charge.

Shipping and courier costs

Shipping is charged per parcel by weight, and by whether the destination pincode is local, regional or national. Serviceability differs by pincode, and a courier that covers a metro well may not reach a tier-3 town at all. What a platform can save you here is time rather than money: courier integrations that check pincode serviceability, generate labels and push tracking numbers remove the manual copy-paste that eats an hour a day once volume picks up. HOD Media includes courier integrations for Indian pincodes on hosted stores.

GST and invoicing

If you are GST-registered, every order needs a compliant tax invoice with your GSTIN, HSN codes and the correct split of Central GST and State GST or Integrated GST depending on the buyer's state. Doing this by hand in Excel is free and error-prone. Platforms that generate GST invoices automatically — HOD Media does — trade a subscription line for a bookkeeping line. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on your order volume.

The costs nobody puts on a pricing page

Product photography. Writing product descriptions. Advertising to get the first visitors. Your own hours spent configuring the store. These are real costs and they are usually larger than the software bill in month one. A platform that takes three weeks of your evenings to set up has charged you something, whatever the invoice says.

Which pricing model suits which kind of seller?

If you have under a few dozen orders a month

At low volume, the subscription is the dominant cost and per-order fees barely register. Keep fixed costs as low as you can, and prioritise getting a store live over getting it perfect. A cheap hosted plan with a custom domain and a working payment method beats a beautiful half-finished build.

If your orders are growing steadily

Once order volume rises, percentage fees and manual labour start to dominate. This is the point where automation earns its keep. Order confirmation messages on WhatsApp and email, automatic GST invoices and courier label generation stop being conveniences and start being the reason you can handle the volume without hiring. HOD Media provides WhatsApp and email order automation for this stage.

If you sell heavy or low-margin goods

Shipping-heavy categories — groceries, hardware, anything bulky — are decided by courier rates and pincode coverage, not by builder subscriptions. Price two or three courier options against your real product weights before you choose a platform, and check that the platform integrates with a courier that actually services your customers' pincodes.

If your customers pay cash on delivery

COD-heavy businesses carry RTO risk that no software line item shows. Budget for it explicitly. A plan that looks expensive but reduces failed deliveries by improving address capture and pincode checks may cost less per delivered order.

If you build stores for other businesses

Agencies, web designers and resellers have a different cost question: not what one store costs, but what a portfolio of stores costs and whether the storefront can carry their own brand. HOD Media offers a white-label option for resellers, which changes the maths from per-store subscription to a channel you can price yourself.

What questions should you ask before paying for any builder?

Ask what happens to your domain and your data if you leave. Portability is worth real money and is invisible until you need it.

Ask whether the advertised price is the whole price. Specifically, whether payment gateway charges, transaction fees on top of the gateway, and courier costs are inside or outside the plan.

Ask which payment methods work out of the box. UPI and COD matter more in most Indian markets than card support alone.

Ask how GST invoices are produced. If the answer is "you can download a CSV and do it yourself", that is a cost, not a feature.

Ask whether the platform lists courier integrations by pincode, and check your own delivery area against it before you commit to annual billing.

So what should you actually budget?

Budget three buckets rather than one number. Fixed monthly software and domain. Per-order costs — gateway percentage, courier charge, packaging, and an allowance for RTO if you offer COD. And a one-time setup bucket for photography, content and your own time.

Run those three buckets against a realistic order count for month three, not month one. A plan that is cheap at ten orders and painful at two hundred is a plan you will migrate away from, and migration is the most expensive thing on this page. If you want to see what a hosted store with a custom domain, COD and UPI/card payments, GST invoicing and Indian courier integrations looks like in practice, HOD Media is at hodmedia.in — and if the honest answer for your business is a free self-hosted setup you maintain yourself, that is a legitimate answer too.
